Kyle Tanaka, Timothy Hess & Gary Heyamoto This continuing education participation course will provide an overview of forensic dentistry, identification methods and the role odontology plays in these identifications of the deceased, identifying criminals and their victims. Course Logistics: Registration: 8:30 – 9:00am Time: 9:00am to 5:00pm Lunch: 12:00am to 1:00pm Location: Washington Academy of General Conference Center Course Description: Dentists have played very important roles identifying victims of major catastrophes, such as natural disasters, airplane crashes, and terrorist activities. Dental professionals were integral in identifying victims of such tragedies as the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing, the 911 World Trade Center attacks, the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 and locally, the 2014 Oso, Washington landslide. Dental professionals have an unique skill set that makes them indispensable to the medical examiner or coroner’s office. With some basic training and credentials, the dental professional will be qualified to volunteer to assist in future emergencies. This course will focus on the use of the WinID program. WinID is a dental computer software that can assist forensic odontologists’ human identification efforts. WinID makes use of dental and anthropometric characteristics to rank possible matches.
