UWSOD AGD Student Chapter Graduate Prosthodontics Lecture Series
We were taught in dental school that tooth wear comes in 3 varieties: attrition, erosion, and abrasion. But what we weren’t taught is that attrition also comes in different varieties! Pathway wear or the “constricted envelope of function” is one of these varieties of attrition that you may not have heard of, but you’ve likely seen in your patients. This lecture will teach you what “Pathway Wear” means, what to look for clinically in your patients, and what can be done to treat it. (HINT: It’s not a night guard). An interesting case presentation of “Invisalign gone-wrong” will be used to demonstrate treatment of a patient with Pathway wear.
After the lecture, attendees should be able to:
- Identify the three characteristic wear facets patterns: edge-to-edge, pathway, and cross-over wear
- Describe the “Envelope of Motion” and how it differs from the “Envelope of Function”
- Describe the etiology of pathway wear
- Identify early and late signs of pathway wear
- Understand how the etiology directly relates to the treatment and restoration of patients with pathway wear
