Summary:
Despite the advances in preventive dentistry, there remain many patients in daily practice who are completely edentulous or who present with a terminal dentition requiring full mouth extractions. Many of these patients come in seeking implants but discover that a fully fixed solution is financially out of reach.
For these patients, a complete denture in the maxilla opposing a mandibular two-implant Locator overdenture is an excellent treatment option that is financially feasible and functionally satisfactory. For some patients this will be the definitive treatment and for others it may be a first step towards a future fixed implant solution. Planning your implant positions in advance is critical to ensuring patient satisfaction and longevity of both the implant and prosthesis.
For practitioners, the mandibular two-implant Locator overdenture is a straight-forward procedure that can significantly improve patient satisfaction with a removable prosthesis compared to conventional dentures. It is an essential skill to master for young clinicians and experienced practitioners alike, especially those looking to add to fully fixed implant solutions for edentulous patients to their repertoire in the future.
